Era Milestones and History:
Machina/The Machines of God- certified Gold (April 18, 2000)
-In April, The Arising" club tour, marking the official return of drummer,
Jimmy Chamberlin took place. It is overheard, that D'arcy 
threatened to quit the band during their Pittsburgh show.
-The Smashing Pumpkins Official Website had its first incarnation in
1999 during the Arising! Tour including the brief and infamous chat
with Billy and James.
-On September 9th, 1999- D'arcy is confirmed to have left the band.
-In October, Billy and Jimmy play at the Bridge School Benefit debuting
"Age of Innocence"
-In November, Melissa Auf Der Maur officially becomes a touring
member of the Smashing Pumpkins. "The Everlasting Gaze" hits the
radio waves.
-In January 2000, Pumpkins begin European tour, and make an
appearance on Politically Incorrect's Super Bowl show. "The Everlasting
Gaze" becomes the first video, directed by Jonas Akerlund.
-Machina is released on February 28, 2000. Resume the Pose signing
and club tour of North America begins. Machina debuts at #3 on
Billboard. It also peaks at #2 on the CNN World Beat Charts.
-In April, the band kicks off their Sacred and Profane world tour in
Kansas City, Kansas. On the 18th, Machina is certified gold. It also is
revealed that "I of the Mourning" would only be a radio single. SP
subsequently performs the song on Late Night with David Letterman on
the 26th. -May 2000 turned out to be the turning point in the band's career. Billy
announced the break up of the band, effective at year's end, on the
air waves of KROQ, just hours before their May 23rd show in LA. Other
news during the month included D'arcy finishing her drug rehab and the
charges being dropped against her. Also, Billy made another appearance
on Politically Incorrect. Jonathan Morrill, a bandmate of Corgan's during
his time with The Marked, sues Billy for the alleged theft and illegal use
of documentary footage of that band.
-June 2000:Billy leaks the Friends and Enemies tape, as well as the
Gravity Demos to select people in the SP online community. Also during
the month, Ron Roesing, another former member of The Marked,
revealed what the real early SP history, involving him as their drummer.
Billy subsequently sues Roesing for the supposed release of a double cd
called Hopefulness and Oh So Finite Happiness. A short documentary
about the Machina surfaced on the band's official site during this month
as well. Ivy's Long Distance album is released in Japan. James Iha plays
guitar on "Midnight Sun"
-During July, the Pumpkins for the first and last time in Seoul, Korea.
Billy Corgan also revealed that the band would be going back into the
studio to finish recording and/or mixing 10-14 songs, some of which
were left over from the Machina sessions.
-In August, the band headlined Our Lady Peace's Canadian rock festival,
Summersault. The "Try, Try, Try" video premiered on MTV Europe, but
it would not be widely shown in North America due to it's graphic
content. An uncut version of the video was posted on SP's official
website as well. Also during the month, Billy put his Victorian home in
Chicago up for sale.
-September 2000 marked the release of Machina 2. It was distributed
online for free, without Virgin Records authorization. The only physical
copies of the album are 25 box vinyl box sets that were couried to
people to select people in the SP online community, radio, etc.
-In October, SP wins the Most Visionary Video Award at the VH1
Fashion Awards for the "Stand Inside Your Love" video.
-During November, the band performed their final television performance
on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. They performed "Cash Car Star"
from Machina 2. Earlier that month, they appeared on an episode of
VH1 Storytellers. At the end of the month, they performed their final
arena show at the United Center in Chicago on the 29th. Q101 aired
their final song recorded ever, "Untitled", earlier that day.
-December 2000: On the 2nd, the Pumpkins ended their career at the
place where they began their career, Metro-the legendary Chicago rock
club. The evening included numerous guest musicians including Matt
Walker, members of The Frogs, and Billy Corgan Sr. To end off the
month, Fox Chicago aired a retrospective documentary on the band.
It was called "Full Circle, and included interviews with Joe Shanahan
(Metro Owner), Nina Gordon (formerly of Veruca Salt), and Rick Nielsen
(Cheap Trick) among others.
