Era Milestones and History: Gish-certified platinum, 2/05/99 -On July 9th,1988 Billy and James play their first gig with a drum machine as Smashing Pumpkins -On August 10th, at the Avalon in Chicago, the Pumpkins now with D'arcy, played to 50 people -On October 5th, they played a small gig at the Chicago Metro. -In November, they opened for Jane's Addiction as a four-piece with recently acquired drummer, Jimmy Chamberlin. -In Spring of 1989, they played the "Light into Dark" show at the Metro, which was released on Halo Records' "Light into Dark". Also, the Limited Potential "I Am One" 7" was released and the Pumpkins recorded some the Eye and Moon demos. They began touring outside of Chicago. -In December 1990, the Tristessa Sub Pop singles are released. They begin to record Gish. -In March 1991, the band finishes recording Gish -In May, Gish is released. They have begun touring by this time. -In August, the single for Siva is released. The video earned them a touring gig with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. -December 1991: Lull is released -In June of 1992,the infamous Peel Sessions is released. In the next month, the Singles soundtrack was released. -In August, the Pumpkins released the "I Am One" UK singles to coincide with the Reading Festival. Billy apparently had a tantrum on stage and the band almost split up. -In December 1992, the Pumpkins begin recording Siamese Dream. |
