James Iha released his debut
solo album in February 1998.
Era Milestones and History:
Adore-certified platinum, 7/08/98 (3 million copies
worldwide)
-In early 1998,the bulk of "Adore" is recorded and mixing
done
-On January 15,1998, James and Billy played acoustic
sets at the Viper Room. James opened with a few songs
from Let It Come Down; Billy played some songs that
would appear on Adore as well as 2 unreleased songs
and "1979" for the encore.
-On February 10, James' solo album, Let It Come Down
was released and he embarked on a small promo tour for
it later in the month. SP won the Grammy on the 26th 
for Best Hard Rock Performance for "TEITBITE".
-In March,they sued Sound and Media Ltd. for the
unauthorized release of an interview book/CD by Jim
Stapelton. They also won the terms to their existing
contract with Virgin Records.
-In April, Kenny Aronoff was officially announced as
their drummer and Lisa Germano, their violinist, for the
Adore Tour.
-On May 2nd, SP opened for Cheap Trick at the Chicago
Metro. They also began their European tour including a 3
song performance on Later With Jools Holland in the UK.
The "Ava Adore" single was released in the UK and the
video for it was shot. Lisa Germano was discharged from
the tour during the month as well.
-Adore was released on June 2nd. SP began their North
America charity tour on the 30th in San Fransico.
-On July 7th,they played their anniversary show in
Chicago. During July they appeared on the radio shows,
Modern Rock Live and Rockline. SP played their only free
concert in the US on the 17th in Minneapolis. A couple
of days later they played on Muchmusic's Intimate and
Interactive. They filmed the "Perfect" video.On the 30th,
SP performed "Perfect" on David Letterman, which was
part of a small show they did on 53rd Street in NY.
-In August,Billy did an indepth interview on Charlie Rose.
The band played "Perfect" and did an interview on Live
With Regis and Kathie Lee. They also did an interiew on
CNN Showbiz Today.  Billy and James also did an
interview on the City TV/Muchmusic show, The New
Music.
-The several different "Perfect" singles were released
in September. They performed "Ava Adore" to start off
the Muchmusic Video Awards. The band played "Perfect"
and were in a skit for the season premiere of SNL.
-During October, it was reported that the band raised
$2,686,973.59 for their US charity tour. They performed
"Crestfallen" during the VH1 Fashion Awards. At the end
of the month, they opened for Kiss. The setlist included
new versions of old favorites and "Cash Car Star".
-In November, the promo for "Crestfallen" was released
on the 3rd and Billy did an interview on Late Late Show
With Tom Snyder on the 6th. On the 7th, Ivy's
Apartment Life is re-released. As noted before, James
played guitar or vocals on 2 songs from this album. -On December 12th, Billy performed for the KROQ Almost Christmas. He played the new songs, "One Less Moment" and "If There Is A God" during his set. He also played with Depeche Mode for their song, "Never Let Me Down Again". The "To Sheila" promo was released. -In January 1999, the Pumpkins severed their connection to Q Prime Management. -During February, Billy Corgan and Mike Garson(who was the pianist for the Adore Tour), scored music for the film, Stigmata. Billy also presented at the Grammys on the 24th with Shirley Manson of Garbage. -In March,Princeton Music Professor Peter Jeffrey began suing the Pumpkins among others for allegedly damaging his hearing during a concert in New Haven, CT in 1997. On the 25th, Billy and his father played two songs for the First Waltz benefit. Billy hinted at the return of Jimmy for the upcoming club tour in April.
